Literacy is a fundamental life skillone that serves as a portal to knowledge and a lifetime of opportunity” – Story Shares

Our English Curriculum has been carefully designed, planned and organised to ensure breadth, balance and depth for every learner at Huntingdon Academy, irrelevant of their age, background or barriers. When planning our curriculum all teaching staff were involved and using our knowledge of pupil’s context, we tailored an English curriculum centred on high quality texts which have been carefully selected to ensure that they engage and represent all pupils. Using these texts ensures our children are fully immersed in their learning and this in turn moves children towards a deep level of understanding where they use and apply skills and knowledge in different areas.

Through our English Curriculum, we intend for pupils to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to become lifelong learners and linguists. We strive to ensure that all our pupils receive a well-rounded learning experience when reading, writing, speaking and listening which will equip them with the fundamental tools to achieve in school and beyond.

Reading is at the heart of the curriculum with class texts chosen to ensure children experience a wide variety of texts, broaden vocabulary, understanding of grammar and allow children to experience reading for pleasure which underpins all learning across the curriculum. Pupils at Huntingdon Academy are exposed to a diverse, exciting and stimulating array of literature that encourages them to question, consider, wonder and learn about other people, issues and places, as well as themselves. They are taught how to use this knowledge, their growing vocabulary and informed opinions to write and speak for a range of differing, genuine purposes and for varied audiences.
