New allotment project to help Huntingdon Academy pupils connect with nature

Huntingdon Academy is transforming an unused outdoor area into a new nature garden and allotment with support from staff, pupils and the local community.

The project will see the previously unused space redeveloped into a shared outdoor environment where pupils can grow fruit, vegetables and flowers, while learning about healthy eating and sustainability.

In addition to raised planting beds, the allotment will also feature a wooded area and a pond, creating opportunities for pupils to explore wildlife and biodiversity.

Working alongside members of the local community, pupils have played an active role in shaping the space, helping to plant and develop areas that will continue to grow over time.

In developing the space, the school was joined by loved ones of Ian Coates, the school’s former caretaker, who was one of those killed in the 2023 Nottingham attacks. It follows the creation of a memorial garden at the school in honour of Mr Coates, which was recognised with first prize in Nottingham City Council’s Best Gardener Awards last year.

The project has also been supported by organisations including Experian, John A. Stephens Ltd., Influence Landscape Planning and Design and Naturescape, who have contributed materials, expertise and resources to help bring the space to life.

Rebecca Riley, Head of School at Huntingdon Academy, said:

“As an inner-city school, having a space like this is so important. We hope it will continue to support our pupils’ wellbeing and enjoyment of learning for many years to come.

“This space builds on Ian’s legacy and the memorial garden created in his honour.  Ian went above and beyond for our pupils and it’s wonderful to be creating something with the involvement of Ian’s son and sister – that feels really special.”

“Our staff and wider community go the extra mile to bring joy into young people’s lives, and this project is a reflection of that shared commitment. We are so happy to see the community rally around it, and are grateful for the support we have received.”
