Huntingdon Academy celebrates inspiring pupil’s award success

Huntingdon Academy, part of L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, is celebrating after Year 5 pupil Reece received the Children of Courage award from the Rotary Club of Nottingham.

Held at the Crowne Plaza Nottingham, the annual celebration recognises children and young people who have shown “remarkable strength, bravery, and resilience”. Awards were presented by the President of the Rotary Club of Nottingham with a special message from Paralympic gold medallist Richard Whitehead MBE.

Reece was nominated for his resilience, bravery and selflessness. Having attended Huntingdon Academy since Reception, staff have watched him grow into a determined and compassionate young man who inspires those around him every day.

Reece has cerebral palsy and faces daily challenges, yet approaches each day with positivity, courage and a sharp sense of humour. In Year 2, he underwent major surgery on his hips, leaving him unable to weight-bear for a period of time. Through perseverance and hard work, he rebuilt his strength and confidence. Today, he is standing and spending time using his walker, an achievement that reflects his resilience and unwavering determination.

Alongside his bravery, Reece is known throughout the school for his kindness and encouragement towards others. On the football pitch, he is one of his classmates’ biggest supporters, celebrating their successes as enthusiastically as his own. In the classroom, he warmly welcomes new pupils and helps them feel included, while friends often turn to him for encouragement when they are facing challenges themselves.

His passion for football has also inspired him to join a wheelchair football team, driven by his dream of one day playing for Nottingham Forest.

The wider school community has supported Reece throughout his journey, celebrating his achievements and encouraging him through challenges. Staff say his positive attitude and willingness to support others have made him a role model for pupils across the academy, with classmates and younger children looking up to him with admiration.

Reflecting on the recognition, Reece said:

“I was really happy to receive the award and proud to represent my school. There have been times when things have been difficult, but I always try my best and keep going.

“I would like to thank my family, friends and teachers for supporting me. I enjoy helping other people and I hope I can show that you should never give up on your goals.”

Rebecca Riley, Head of School at Huntingdon Academy, said:

“Reece is an inspiration to everyone fortunate enough to know him. He always approaches life with positivity, courage and kindness.

“His resilience and determination are remarkable, but what stands out most is the way he supports and encourages others. Whether on the football pitch, in the classroom or with his friends and family, Reece always puts others first. We are incredibly proud to see him recognised.”
